2 Nights / 3 Days : Fri 15 May – Sun 17 May 2026
Explore and photograph the best of Taranaki and the surrounding region. We will capture the amazing mountain from some seriously great locations as well as photograph waterfalls, the famed goblin forest, the rugged coastline and more.
Our weekend mini-tours are designed to be an immersive hands on experience where we pack in practical time photographing in some of New Zealand’s best locations.
This is a weekend workshop which focuses on getting you to the right locations at the right time to capture amazing photographs from around the Taranaki Region.
New Plymouth
Taranaki offers an amazing amount of opportunities for landscape photography and we will pack in much of it. Our main aim is to capture stunning and unique photography of this amazing symmetrical mountain as well as the other stunning features of the region.
We are up and on location before dawn and aim to stay out till after sunset – taking advantage of what can often be magical dawn and dusk light. We never rush locations and make sure that everyone is capturing the images they want. Often we are the only people at these amazing locations.
We believe in giving you sound knowledge and developing new skills in landscape photography, and then putting these to practice in some of New Zealand’s best landscapes.
Over the weekend our photography will include:
We meet at our hotel in New Plymouth at lunchtime on Friday. After introductions we will have a debrief of the weekend ahead, including running through equipment (camera’s, lenses, filters etc), weather conditions and answer any questions.
We then get right into it and set off for our first photography session.
The precise order of locations we visit is determined by the conditions – we allow for flexibility in our schedule and aim to be in the best locations at the right time. We have learnt that sometimes the best photographs are captured when you ‘follow the light’.
Our finish time on Sunday afternoon is a little flexible as some people decide to set off home earlier. We will have a debrief and aim to finish the workshop by 4 pm on allowing everyone to make their way home.
Our Photography Mini-Tours are designed for anyone wanting to learn new skills in photography and venture to some truly outstanding scenery. But also we have designed them to be about discovery and finding inspiration in the outdoors. These really are fantastic (sometimes) life changing experiences.
For most of the tours a medium level of fitness will be fine. There is some moderate walking required along the way but nothing too excessive.
You should be familiar with the basic operations of a DSLR camera. Regardless of your skill level you will learn and experience new and exciting things.
Our photo tours are designed to provide you with practical new skills and techniques – and then put these to practice in-the-field in amazing landscapes. You will be photographing alongside a guide with decades of experience and a passion for creating beautiful photographic images.
What you will come away with is new knowledge, many new images and an amazing experience that leaves you highly inspired in your own landscape photography journey.
Our accommodation is in quality hotels, apartment studios or chalets depending on the location.
Accommodation is full single supplement ie your own room – we believe at the end of a full day of photography you will relax and refresh the best with your own room.
We have a maximum group size of four on our weekend mini-tours.
We have found this to be the right size to have great dynamics within the group (we have a lot of fun along the way) and allow everyone’s needs to be met in terms of learning and the overall experience.
Your sense of adventure and fun – our photo tours are immersive experiences with plenty of fun along the way. We send you a photo tour welcome package in advance of the start which offers more suggestions on what gear to bring. However a good start is:
Essentials
Nice to haves
We generally find that there are a variety of meal options applied across a typical workshop. Breakfast will normally be at a cafe after a dawn photo shoot – that first coffee can be really rewarding after a early morning on location.
We always allow time to get supplies at supermarkets, bakeries or cafe’s and lunch is usually spent along the way, often in some superb spots. Dinner is usually after our evening photo shoot at a local restaurant where we can relax together as a group after a great day of photography.
Meals are not included in the tour price.
Your guide on this photo mini-tour is New Zealand landscape photographer Richard Hume. Richard has many years’ experience photographing across the width and breadth of New Zealand and an enormous amount of experience to share.
